Should you ever go back to someone, or something, that almost destroyed you?

What if they’re sorry? What if they say they’ve changed?

What if they’re offering an EU passport?

Following a bereavement, Brexit and a bad break up Anna decides to make some changes. When Anna suggested getting back with her ex, her friends were appalled,  and to her surprise, her family felt very much the same way when she jumped into bed with Germany.

In ‘Going Deutsch’ Anna dates the country offering her citizenship despite taking the lives (and passports) of so many who came before her. Should she get back with Germany? Can they get past their history?  Could they ever make it work?

Going Deutsch is a comedic show about relationships, inherited trauma and how much the past shapes the future.

Anna received Arts Council Funding in 2021 to develop this work with support from CLAY (Leeds), The Exchange Theatre and Camden People’s Theatre (London). A 20 minute extract was shared as part of the Camden People’s Theatre night, Big Bang.  A run was scheduled to perform at VAULT in March 2022 before the festival was cancelled.

It is produced by Discerning Nights, with direction by Liz Guterbock, movement direction by Suzannah Hall and additional performance direction from Jay Bennett and Jessie Brooks.

“I really related to 'Going Deutsch' in which extremely endearing, physical, funny, actor/ writer Anna Clover ‘dates’ the country offering her citizenship… The things we do for an EU passport”

“This show was so brilliant…so smart, emotive, funny, thought-provoking...”

“It was utterly compelling, courageous and moving”

“Incredibly clever storytelling. Immensely engaging. I haven’t laughed out loud for ages…thank you!””

As a daughter of a holocaust survivor … I found 'Going Deutsch' highly relevant, clever and thought provoking. Despite it's serious content, Anna sensitively combined pathos and humour. Her performance was flawless. A must see!
